Jamel Shabazz:
“The Brooklyn-Queens Connection” (2002)
Jamel Shabazz (b. 1960, Brooklyn) has documented the cultural heartbeat of New York City for over four decades. Best known for his influential monographs “Back in the Days” (2001)↗ and “A Time Before Crack” (2005)↗, his work fuses posed portraiture with documentary intention, offering a vibrant archive of Black and brown life in the city’s outer boroughs. Shabazz’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide and is housed in prestigious permanent collections like The Whitney Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.
